The main causes of forest degradation in Mongolia are fires, improper forest harvesting, illegal logging, pests, and diseases. Other forest decline factors include collecting pine nuts by hitting pine trees with a huge wooden mallet and khadag, a ceremonial silk scarf tied to trees that damage tree bark and inhibit their growth.
To prevent this problem raising public awareness by providing knowledge so that people can make their own, informed decisions is the key.
